[affcoups id=”4369″ template=”standard”]

I’ve been using Toonly every day or so for the last couple of months and I think it’s time to get my thoughts out on the internet.

In this article, I’m going to share my honest Toonly review and share whether you should spend your money on it or look for some other alternatives.

Let’s get started with a quick introduction for those not aware of Toonly.

Table of Contents

What Is Toonly?

Toonly Discount

To put it in simple terms:

Toonly is a drag-and-drop video maker that allows beginners like us to create professional animated videos with a few clicks!

What it means is that you longer need to spend thousands of dollars to get a custom animated video for your company.

And if you’ve ever hired someone to help you create videos, you’d know that the cost can be extravagant – especially for animated videos.

It’d cost you anywhere from $150 to $10,000 or more for a 30-seconds animated video.

In an experiment by Wyzowl, they found that the average price for a 60-second explainer video is $7,972 (that's crazy!!!)

how much does animated videos cost

Now, I am not saying that the videos made with Toonly are better than (or even comparable in some cases) the videos created by professionals who do it for a living.

But, for someone, who doesn’t have a lot of money and skillset to create their own animated videos, Toonly is a game-changer.

The best part is that you don’t need to have any prior experience to use Toonly. And you don’t need a high-end computer machine that looks like it came straight from a sci-fi movie.

You can install it on any regular Mac or PC device and start using it locally as it’s not web-based software.

Thanks to its intuitive layout and drag-and-drop page builder, you can master everything Toonly has to offer in a couple of days.

All of that combined makes Toonly very interesting software and definitely worth anyone’s time. Also, it doesn’t cost a fortune and comes with a 30-days money-back guarantee.

So, if you purchase Toonly and decide it’s not good for whatever you want to do, you can get your money back. As simple as that!

With the introduction done and your hopes up, let’s get straight to a detailed Toonly review and talk about what it has to offer.

Toonly Review: Features & What’s Included

While there are a lot of talking points, I’ll be discussing only the most important ones you should know.

1. Incredibly Easy To Learn and Use

The biggest talking point and probably the reason why Toonly got so popular is how easy it is for people with little-to-no design or technical skills.

It’s a 100% drag-and-drop video editor where you can select a background, choose the right character from the library, add animations or transitions, and voila!

You’ve created an animated scene within minutes.

Yes, yes, it’s not something to write about home about (yet?) but you’d genuinely be surprised to see how easy it is to create a 5-seconds animation with Toonly.

To add more depth to the scene and make it interesting, you can add speech bubbles and body movements (still using their drag-and-drop editor.)

For example, if you wanted to introduce yourself to the audience, you can add a hand wave movement and use bubble speech texts to say something,

And creating that entire scene will probably take you a couple of minutes (even less when you get used to the program.)

If that isn’t impressive, I don’t know what is!

2. Works on Both Mac and Windows PC

A problem with a lot of popular video editors is that they may work on a platform but not on another.

Take the example of iMovie, a popular video editor for Apple’s Mac ecosystem which isn’t available for Windows.

With platforms like this, you essentially get stuck to a single operating system and will have to think twice if you want to switch.

But, that’s not the case with Toonly. Kudos to the developers behind Toonly, it works flawlessly on both Windows and Mac systems.

Also, the user interface and controls are very similar so you wouldn’t even notice that you’re using it on a different machine.

While Toonly is downloaded on a local machine, it requires an active internet connection to work.

This is because it syncs the files with Toonly’s cloud server and checks for updates and licenses every time you launch it.

However, I have noticed a huge demand in requests (me included) to make Toonly available offline in their support tickets.

So, it won’t be long before Toonly takes action on it and makes it available for offline usage (except for license and update check on launch.)

3. Ready to Use Animations and Facial Expressions

Let me put it very clear –

There’s nothing like Toonly when it comes to readymade animations and facial expressions to help you create animated videos.

With most video editors, you’d have to figure out this yourself which requires a steep learning curve and probably months of practice.

Toonly hits the ball out of the park here.

There are dozens of pre-made animation actions and facial expressions that you can use with one click for each available character.

For example, once you import a character to the screen, you can make it walk, jump, wave, sit, laugh, etc., without having to manually do everything.

This instantly improves your video quality and makes the video look more interactive.

I can see it come very handy for sales and marketing videos to show customers jump with joy after getting to know a product.

It’s also great for YouTubers who want to animate a story and make the character do a lot more than just stand there.

There’s a lot to talk about the premade actions and facial expressions but I’ll leave the testing to you.

You can subscribe to Toonly for just $20/month right now and take it for a trial.

Remember, if you don’t like it, there’s a 30-days money-back guarantee to help you out!

4. Massive Toonly Library

Toonly Library is an ever-expanding list of readymade items made available to you. The team keeps adding new elements to the list so you can create up-to-date videos.

It contains hundreds of:

  • Characters
  • Animations
  • Prop images
  • Facial expressions
  • Backgrounds
  • Premade scenes
  • Scene transitions
  • Background audios
  • Text animations

You can use these to create animated videos for almost every imaginable scene.

Want to create a chilling scene, use a beach background with props such as volleyball, beach chairs, seashells, and more. Additionally, add background audio of water to give it a more authentic feel.

Similarly, you can create an office environment by using a proper background and adding props and characters dressed in suits.

The possibilities are endless!

However, note that you get access to these elements based on what membership you pick.

While Enterprise package users can get access to all the available elements, standard users get to use a limited number of items.

Here’s a quick comparison between both Toonly pricing packages (annual) and what you’ll get with each:

Toonly Annual Pricing
Toonly monthly pricing

Undoubtedly, the Enterprise package looks more tempting but for a beginner, even the Standard option would be sufficient.

Unless you want access to…

5. Toonly Club

One important difference between both packages is access to the Toonly Club.

It’s the holy grail of Toonly and probably the most important reason why you should choose the Enterprise package.

The team behind Toonly works on a consistent basis to add more characters and props to the library according to current trends in the world.

These new elements are added to the Toonly Club on a monthly basis and made available to Enterprise users for free.

This way, you can get access to new elements and create more unique videos without feeling restricted.

I’ll compare both the packages in detail in the “Pricing” section, so keep reading!

6. Upload Your Own Elements

It’s hard to look different and make your brand appear unique when you’re using the same software as hundreds of others.

To get around it, Toonly allows you to upload your own fonts, images, audio, and voice-overs!

Anything you upload gets added to the library which you can easily drag and drop to a project.

This makes it so much easier for you to come up with unique brand videos that no other Toonly users can copy.

Having your own style of videos is also a plus point for online content creators as it helps them instantly pop out.

So, what are you waiting for? Get access to Toonly and start creating your own unique videos.

7. Support for Up To 4K Video Export

With the never-stopping demand for quality content and improvement in internet speed and better displays, people crave high-quality videos more than ever.

A couple of years ago, it was a luxury to watch online videos in HD i.e., 720p. But today, internet users watch videos at a minimum of Full HD (1080p) resolution and move towards 4K content.

If you want to stay with the wave and don’t get left behind, stop uploading videos of poor quality.

Not only it will affect your business but also make viewers build a negative perception of your brand.

No, I’m not just saying it. Here’s the proof to prove:

According to research by Brightcove, the quality of your video has the power to influence the perception of the audience towards your brand.

Around 62% of viewers will create a negative perception if you publish a poor quality video and 60% wouldn’t want to engage with your brand.

Those stats make one thing very clear – you shouldn’t bury your head in the sand or do a lousy job when it comes to video quality.

Fortunately, Toonly is a software that understands this and has tried to keep up with technological advancement.

It allows you to export videos right from the lowest 360p resolution to all the way up to 4k resolution.

To be more specific, you can export your videos in the following resolutions:

  • 360p
  • 480p
  • 720p
  • 1080p
  • 4k

In addition, Toonly also allows you to adjust video quality between 62% to 100% (helps in reducing file size while maintaining the same resolution.)

This is exceptional, especially when you consider that Toonly is a drag-and-drop video editor that doesn’t require many resources to run.

So, no more uploading those blurry videos!

8. Use on Multiple Computers with 1 License

Have you ever purchased any of the popular video editing program’s licenses like Camtasia or Adobe Premiere Pro (which costs around $32/month)?

If you have, you’d know that the license works only on a single machine at a time. So, if you want to use it on more than one machine, you can’t.

That’s a major limitation that can restrict your productivity and limit you to a single machine.

But…

Yes, you guessed it right… Toonly doesn’t have that limitation.

There’s no limit on how many computers you can use Toonly.

Also, Toonly will automatically sync your and your project details from their cloud server to keep you updated on your new device.

You no longer need to carry your primary machine everywhere. If you can get access to another Mac or Windows machine, you’re ready to create animated videos.

9. Lessons, Tutorials, Excellent Support, and Regular Updates

I’ll be honest:

When I first heard about Toonly (obviously through their repetitive ads placed all over social media), my first thought was this:

It would be a company that’d sell the software for cheap and then disappear into thin air. There will be no updates or proper customer support.

The reason being that I have purchased dozens of such online tools that promise every feature available in the world but never delivers them.

And when you reach out to the support, all you hear is… silence.

Toonly is different and their customer support surprised me the most.

If you look at their support website, they have hundreds of tutorials to walk you through everything with proper explanations.

Besides, there’s a dedicated tutorials page that offers 12 free tutorial videos to walk you through the basics in the easiest way possible.

At the time of writing this, you can find tutorials around:

  1. Toonly interface
  2. Working with Characters
  3. Working with Objects
  4. Transitions
  5. Adding music
  6. Adding a voiceover
  7. Backgrounds and preset scenes
  8. Zooming and Panning
  9. Text underlay and object rotation
  10.  Animation trimming
  11.  Bulk operations
  12.  Lip sync

That’s basically everything you need to know to create a professional-looking animated video within minutes.

And if you are stuck somewhere, you’ll also find detailed answers to all the common questions in the knowledge base. It covers problems around troubleshooting, account and login, billing and cancellation, and other general issues.

And if you can’t find a proper solution to your query, there’s a button on the top to help you create a new ticket and get a resolution.

What’s more, you are sure to get regular updates and new features added to your Toonly software.

As soon as you open Toonly, it checks for the latest updates and recommends you to download it.

Simple, isn’t it?

10. Active Facebook Group

It’s a whole different feeling when you have access to a community that speaks your language.

If you’re someone who likes to spend time on Facebook, make sure to join Toonly’s Facebook group with over 30,000+ active members.

Toonly Facebook Group

It’s a private group so the admin takes spamming very seriously so you’ll be sure that other members aren’t going to spam or talk nonsense.

This group board will make it easier for you to connect with others, discuss ideas, and probably build a connection that’ll help you grow your business.

You can also post your queries here and get an immediate response from either Toonly’s support team or other members who know the solution.

By the way, it’s FREE and included with your membership so you don’t need to pay anything extra.

11. Feature Request

Toonly is not perfect.

In fact, it’s nowhere close to being perfect (if there’s a thing called perfect that exists!)

However, since its launch, the software has developed to be more mature with tons of features.

And this has been possible with their features request page which is available to everyone.

You see:

Most video editing software (or other tools for that matter) allow a set of users to test and suggest improvements.

In most cases, you won’t be able to request a feature directly and get a response to it.

While 90% of users won’t care about future improvements, 10% (like me) do.

So, it’s good to see that Toonly has an open feature request page where every verified buyer can suggest a feature and others can upvote it (to increase the likelihood of it being implemented faster.)

Also, if you notice, the Toonly team takes quick action on these requests and other members also like to take part to discuss and present their own views. Noice!

12. 30-Day Money-Back Guarantee

Well, I have discussed a lot of good points about Toonly and why you should consider purchasing it.

But what if you purchase Toonly based on my recommendation and decide it’s not what you were looking for?

In that case, you should kiss goodbye to your money 🙁

Just kidding!

Your Toonly purchase is backed by a 30-days money-back guarantee.

This means, within the first 30 days of purchasing it, you can get a 100% refund if you decide to not continue using it.

The no questions asked, 30-day money-back guarantee is applicable to all plans and payment frequency.

So, no matter what you purchased, you can be assured to get a complete refund.

All you’ll have to do is to reach out to their support team and request for refund.

Their premium support team will cancel your license and refund you the money immediately.

Toonly’s guarantee is another proof of how confident they are in their product and they aren’t here to take your money and run off!

Let’s now discuss Toonly’s pricing models and which one you should get.

Toonly Pricing & Lifetime Deals

Wondering how much does Toonly costs?

There are two different plans that are kind of similar to a few noteworthy differences.

Toonly Standard vs Enterprise

Toonly Pricing

You can compare both plans yourself here and see how much you’ll be saving when paying on a monthly vs annual basis.

Explained below are the Toonly packages and their monthly/annual pricing structure.

1. Standard – $20 per month

The standard plan is priced at a starting price of $39/month if you decide to subscribe on a monthly basis.

However, you can save an extra 49% by opting for an annual payment which brings down the cost to just $20/month. Click here to buy now!

With the standard plan, you’ll get access to:

  • Characters: 30
  • Character Animations: 17
  • Prop Images: 1,058
  • Backgrounds: 71
  • Premade Scenes: 10
  • Scene Transitions: 21
  • Background Audios: 20
  • Text Animations: 3
  • Invitation To Toonly Facebook Group
  • Create Unlimited Videos
  • Use On Multiple Computers
  • Premium Support

The good thing is that the Standard plan also allows you to create unlimited videos so you can easily cover the cost by creating videos for everything you need.

You also get access to a private Toonly Facebook Group to join the amazing community.

But, you’ll only get limited access to elements.

The most important being – background audios and props which basically means you’re losing over half of the amazing elements.

2. Enterprise – $40 per month

The enterprise plan is the best Toonly has to offer. It doesn’t get better than this!

For a monthly cost of $69 per month which is further reduced to $40 per month with annual payment (a 49% discount), you get access to:

  • Characters: 82
  • Character Animations: 30
  • Prop Images: 2,024
  • Backgrounds: 139
  • Premade Scenes: 20
  • Scene Transitions: 101
  • Background Audios: 142
  • Text Animations: 5
  • Invitation To Toonly Facebook Group
  • Access to Toonly Club (Get New Characters & Props Monthly)
  • Create Unlimited Videos
  • Use On Multiple Computers
  • Premium Support

In addition to extra characters, animations, backgrounds, and basically everything, you also get access to the most important feature – Toonly Club.

As explained above, Toonly Club gives you new props and new characters every month so you can create more unique videos.

And trust me, it’s worth it!

Which one should you go for?

If you want to create only a couple of videos and are planning to give Toonly a test drive before upgrading, the Standard plan is for you!

But, if you want to use it for your business and experience everything Toonly has to offer, go with the Enterprise plan.

Toonly Lifetime Deal: One-Time Purchase Offer

Toonly One Time Facebook Offer

Besides the above two packages, Toonly also likes to run special limited-time promotional offers where you can get access to Toonly for a one-time fee.

Toonly is very aggressive when it comes to promoting this limited-time offer.

So, if you’ve shown any interest in Toonly (like you’re doing now), expect to be bombarded with one-time offers on all social media platforms.

The pricing of this Toonly lifetime deal aka Toonly Facebook or YouTube offer keeps changing.

As of now, they’re offering it for just $67.

That’s right. There are no monthly payments or anything of that sort. Just a one-time payment and you’ll get lifetime access.

Basically, you get access to Toonly’s standard plan for a one-time fee of $67. And everything I mentioned above will be made available to you – including future updates.

Click here to check if the Toonly lifetime deal is available

There’s one limitation though!

The lifetime deal is only available for the Standard plan. If you want to order the Essential package, you’ll still have to shell out the full money.

Also, these offers come and go all the time. So, you can never be sure if you’ll be able to grab it the next time it’s available.

If it is, I’d recommend you hop on and grab this one-time deal as fast as possible. You’re still covered with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Toonly Drawbacks: What Needs To Be Better?

Let me say it again:

Toonly is not perfect. There are plenty of drawbacks that one must consider before buying.

Let’s discuss the most significant ones to keep this Toonly review balanced.

1. No Custom Animations

When you start making animated videos, you’d expect to grow over time and create more advanced videos.

Professional video editing software will be able to scale up with it as they allow you to create custom animations and keep improving your skillset as you learn more.

Sadly, Toonly isn’t meant for it.

The whole idea behind Toonly is to allow super-beginners and people from non-technical backgrounds to create easy animation videos without having to spend months learning a tool.

And it does a great job there – possibly the best.

But, it’s not suitable for those who want to create more advanced videos and take the animation to the next level.

Toonly won’t let you add custom animations so you’re limited with what’s available.

It gets the job done but a few years down the line (if Toonly doesn’t add this feature), you may have to move to a more advanced animated video maker.

That said, if your goal is to create interesting-looking animated videos that can get your brand more sales or help you grow online, you are covered with what Toonly is offering now.

2. Free Tutorials Only Cover The Basic

Technically, it’s not a drawback of the software itself but how the company’s strategy.

Irrespective of your purchase decision, Toonly offers 12 tutorial videos that cover the basic features to help you understand how Toonly works.

But, these tutorial videos are very limited in regards to what they teach. So, even after going through them, you’d still not be able to utilize Toonly’s full potential.

For that, you’ll have to either learn the advanced tactics yourself or enroll in Toonly’s Masterclass.

It’s a paid course that helps you unlock the full potential of Toonly and take your animated videos to the next level. It’s priced at a one-time fee of $97.

You can read more about what’s included in Toonly’s Masterclass here.

I agree it’s not an extravagant price or unethical to ask more money for a quality course, but…

I’d have preferred if the free tutorials would have also covered some of the advanced tips.

Not everyone can afford to pay an extra $97 after paying $39 or $69 per month subscription.

3. No Free Trial

Talking about affordability, another drawback of Toonly is also related to it.

You see:

Almost every online tool or service offers a free trial these days. Take Shopify for example – the best platform to start your eCommerce store in 2022.

They also run on a monthly subscription fee but offer a 14-days free trial so that you can test out the service first-hand before taking out your credit card.

In the case of Toonly, there’s nothing like it.

The only way you can take Toonly for a test drive is by subscribing to a monthly or annual plan. There's no free-trial.

And yes, you’re covered with their 30-days money-back guarantee so there’s no risk of losing money, but it’d be so much easier if there was a free trial.

Even a 3-day free trial would have been sufficient for an average Joe to test out Toonly and decide if it’s worth subscribing for.

Other than these, I couldn’t find any major issues with Toonly, especially considering the price point and what all it has to offer.

Toonly Review: Quick Recap

If you’ve skimmed over the above paragraphs, let me quickly summarize my Toonly review for you:

Pros of Toonly

  • One of (if not) the easiest animation video maker
  • Easy-to-use and intuitive user interface
  • Click-and-drag approach
  • A massive library of characters, props, background, background audios, and a lot more
  • Ready to use animations, facial expressions, and scene transitions
  • Can be downloaded on a Mac or PC machine (no device limit)
  • Upload your own images, backgrounds, music, objects, and a lot more.
  • Access to Toonly Club that gives you more props and character every month (for Enterprise package users)
  • Export your videos in up to 4k resolution
  • Unlimited videos
  • Access to private Toonly Facebook group and premium support
  • 12 free tutorial videos to help you get started
  • Future updates and feature request option
  • 30-day money-back guarantee
  • Save an extra 49% off when you pay annually

Cons of Toonly

  • There’s no free trial
  • You need an active internet connection to use Toonly (used to check license details and sync library)
  • Not allowed to add custom animations
  • Free tutorial videos are rather basic

To put it straight, the pros outweigh the cons by a large margin. Toonly is worth the asking price and you wouldn’t regret buying it.

If you create only one video a month, you’ll recover the cost of Toonly and still save money in comparison to hiring a professional video editor.

How To Create Your First Animated Explainer Videos With Toonly

At first, I’d recommend you go through the tutorial videos (available for free) shared by Toonly which are very well explained and do a great job at covering basics.

Here are simples steps you need to follow to create your first Toonly video:

1. The first step is to add a background that you can do either from the available library or upload your own.

Choose the “Background” tab in the left side menu and then drag-and-drop the one you like over to the canvas.

Toonly add a background

If you want to change the current background, just drag-and-drop another one over it and it’ll be replaced.

2. Choose the “Characters” tab in the left-side menu.

From here, just drag and drop the character you want to the screen. By default, all characters are set to a specific height/size which can be adjusted.

You can also adjust their positioning by dragging them to whatever place you want them to be.

Toonly Add Characters

3. Now, it’s time to add some animations and bring your video to life. There are two ways you can add animation to a character:

First, you can click on any of the characters present in the scene and navigate to the “gear” icon. From here, you can select your desired animation.

Toonly add animations

Second, you can directly right-click on the animation in the timeline which brings the same settings and lets you choose animations.

Toonly Animation Settings

4. Once your animations are added, you can add music effects and background audio to the scene. Alternatively, you can also add voice-overs or on-screen texts if needed.

5. That’s about it. You can now either continue to create more scenes or export the current animation.

It can’t get any easier than this!

Again, if you feel stuck, refer to Toonly’s tutorial videos that’ll walk you through each step of the process.

Who Can Use Toonly?

Everyone.

As long as you or your business can benefit from creating animated explainer videos, Toonly is for you. And that includes:

1. Small Business Owners

Small Business Owners

Do you sell something or provide services locally like a bakery, dentist shop, or a law firm?

Great, use Toonly to create explainer videos and introduce customers to your business in an interesting way.

One thing that has improved after the COVID-19 pandemic is that people are more willing to help local businesses grow.

And everyone wants to support creative local businesses who put their heart and soul into selling something.

Creating animated videos will not only make you stand out from the crowd but also bring more eyeballs to your business.

Plus, people enjoy watching these videos and sharing them with others.

If you can add a pinch of humor, social message, or personality to your videos, the shares will grow exponentially.

2. Bloggers and YouTubers

Bloggers and YouTubers

Blogging is one of the fastest-growing businesses in 2022. And for all the right reasons!

For just $3.95/month, BlueHost hosting can help you create your own blog in less than 20 minutes.

Here’s my complete guide on how to start a blog if you are interested.

Blogging is one of the easiest and cheapest businesses to start that doesn’t require past experience.

And the same goes for starting a YouTube channel. Here, you don’t need any special equipment as your phone’s camera is more than enough to get you started.

However, such a low barrier to entry is also a negative point of these career options.

Since, it’s so easy to start a blog or a YouTube channel, no matter what niche you pick – the competition can (and will) get fierce.

So, you need to find a way to keep your website unique and stick out from others.

Toonly can help you achieve just that.

Using Toonly, you can create animated explainer videos and add them to your website or in-between your YouTube videos. This way, your content will look more interesting and easy to understand.

3. E-commerce Business

E-commerce Website

87% of marketing professionals use video as a marketing tool and it has been proven to get the best ROI.

As an eCommerce business, you are probably spending thousands on paid ads across social media channels.

By using Toonly, you can create attention-grabbing animated explainer videos and use them for promotion. Video ads are also known to get more engagement and lower cost-per-click.

Where Toonly can help you the most is creating multiple video ad variations for the same product. You can create as many as you want and then A/B test to find the winner before scaling up.

4. Educational Institutes

Educational Institutes

Some topics are hard to explain following the traditional way of teaching.

And given that every student uses the internet these days, they’d prefer watching animated videos over reading textbooks any day.

Educational institutes can take benefit of this fact and introduce video-based learning. And since Toonly is super easy to learn, anyone can create the videos without the need to hire a professional.

Online tutors for parents of homeschooling kids can also use Toonly to step up their teaching methods.

5. Presentation or Sales Pitch

Presentation or Sales Pitch

Presentations are boring and there’s no denying that.

It’s so monotonous to watch a person stand there and talk like a robot while scrolling through slides.

If you are that person, maybe it’s time to change that (for the sake of everyone!)

Use Toonly and create some quality explainer videos with background music and voiceover.

This way, your colleagues and bosses would actually want to listen to what you’ve to present (isn’t that everyone’s dream?)

6. Customer Service

Customer Service

You need to be second to none when it comes to providing customer service.

But, let’s agree on the fact that it’s a very tedious thing to do. You can outsource it but that’ll be costly and in most cases, lower quality.

Besides, about 80% of the time, the customers will have queries around the same topic/problem.

So, it makes sense to create a knowledge base and cover these common questions which will reduce customer service load by a huge margin.

Toonly can be of great help here. Instead of jotting down the solution in boring text format, you can explain it in an animated way.

This way, your customers can watch a quick video and get the solution (and share it with others if they like it.)

Toonly itself uses this same technique and you can find a lot of videos and GIFs in their knowledge base.

Plus, they have Toonly tutorials available only in video format as that’s easier for users to understand and follow.

Toonly Alternatives: How Does It Compare With Other Animated Video Makers?

While the overall market of drag-and-drop animated video makers isn’t huge, there are a couple of software (Toonly included) that dominate it.

Let’s compare Toonly against two other popular software and see if it can stack up.

1. Toonly vs Doodly

One thing you should know is – Toonly and Doodly are both created by the same parent company,

And as you’d expect, they don’t actually compete with each other (why would a sane company want to create two variations of the same product, duh?)

Doodly is a whiteboard animation video maker where a hand draws out and writes super fast. Read my in-depth review here.

These are also known as doodle videos and typically use a hand-on-the-screen animation to explain things. There aren't any sort of animated characters involved.

I’m pretty sure you’ve watched one of these before.

On the other hand, Toonly is for animations – humans walking around, animals jumping, cars driving, talking characters, and everything of that sort.

Should you buy Doodly over Toonly?

If your video ideas include a lot of texts and you are planning to add a voiceover, then maybe Doodly will do a better job at that.

From a marketing and sales perspective, Toonly is a better option. And videos created with Toonly grab more attention because of… well of course… animated characters.

2. Toonly vs PowToon

PowToon is a more advanced and expensive animated video maker.

The main difference between Toonly vs PowToon is that PowToon is a cloud-based solution, whereas Toonly requires a software download.

If you don’t have a powerful machine or are always on the go, PowToon can be of more help as you can log in from any device as long as you have the internet. You can use PowToon on mobile or tablet devices too as it’s platform-independent.

However, it also means that you need a high-speed internet connection at all times to use PowToon. With Toonly, you can just get by with a limited speed internet connection which is used for syncing.

PowToon also has a larger library of pre-made templates that look more professional and business-focused. You can also change the color of clothes or other items which aren’t possible with Toonly.

On top of that, PowToon lets you add these custom characters to the library so you can re-use them in the future.

PowToon also has a free trial which allows you to take it for a spin without a subscription. Toonly doesn’t offer this.

One major drawback though is that you can’t add subsequent actions to a character when the previous action is completed. This is something Toonly can easily do.

PowToon is also comparatively a lot of costlier and limited. The base plan starts at $89 per month which is more than double Toonly’s base plan.

PowToon Premium Pricing

And it allows only 5 premium exports per month and 2GB cloud storage. Export is also limited to a maximum of 10 min video length and Full HD (1080p) resolution.

Compare that to Toonly, you get access to everything unlimited without limits for a monthly payment of $39.

Toonly Monthly Plans

To conclude, if you want to create professional marketing/business videos and want a cloud-based solution, PowToon can be a good choice for you.

But, if you want to create a lot of videos at a much cheaper price and don’t mind downloading software, go with Toonly.
